Markham History and Present
Markham was first surveyed as a township in 1793 by William Berczy. Soon after, Berczy led 75 German families to Markham township, in the area now known as German Mills. The first municipal government was structured in 1850 and Markham was incorporated as a town in 1972. Markham is home to numerous communities (see Markham Communities) and according to the 2006 census, has a richly diverse demographic which consists of the following:
